Dear Friends of the World Heritage,

As the year draws to a close, we look back with pride on an eventful year 2025.

On behalf of the World Heritage Management, we wish you and your families a joyful and peaceful Christmas, restful holidays, and an inspiring start to the New Year 2026.

After the Bronze Age finds in August of this year, Hallstatt has revealed its next archaeological sensation: the discovery of a Roman Medusa amulet dating to the 2nd century AD.

The 20th Austrian World Heritage Conference, held this year at the World Heritage Site “City of Graz – Historic Centre and Schloss Eggenberg,” addressed key questions concerning the complex and cross-cutting field of UNESCO World Heritage: How can World Heritage be best integrated into administrative processes to ensure its optimal preservation? What challenges does the urban environment pose for the conservation of World Heritage? How can the issue of renewable energy be approached and implemented sensitively within the context of cultural heritage?

The Province of Upper Austria has placed the CultureEXPO 2027 under the theme World Heritage – Cultural Heritage in Upper Austria. We invite everyone to submit their project ideas by October 30, 2025.

In spring 2025, the World Heritage Management, in close cooperation with the municipality of Hallstatt, initiated a pioneering collaboration with RIEGL. The goal is to create a digital twin of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, expanding and refining the existing digital cultural landscape registry. This comprehensive research project serves to capture and document the World Heritage Site in detail.

The World Heritage Management of the Cultural Landscape Hallstatt–Dachstein / Salzkammergut is seeking a Project Coordinator for the implementation of the LEADER project “Preserving Heritage Together.”
