For 7,500 years, the world’s oldest salt mine has been producing the valuable resource of salt — and it continues to do so today. The guided tours in the show mine are highly rewarding, featuring the historic cemetery from the Hallstatt period, the oldest wooden staircase in the world, and the “Man in the Salt” discovered in 1734 — all fascinating and engaging. Stunning views from the Rudolf Tower and the “World Heritage View” complete the experience perfectly.

We live in a world of shifting values, where craftsmanship increasingly engages with stylistic and cultural questions. Our understanding of craft identity is fundamentally linked to the question of memory: where memory fades, identity fades as well.

With the establishment of two successor organizations — Aufbruch, Salzkammergut! in Upper Austria and the Kulturbüro Ausseerland Salzkammergut in Styria, which will serve as future points of contact and hubs — the long-term cultural development of the Salzkammergut is further secured.

The central goal is to effectively pass on the accumulated experience of those involved in the Capital of Culture — from artists and project organizers to visitors. These collected insights form the basis for assessing the region’s cultural landscape. In this way, the Salzkammergut aims to establish itself permanently as an open, creative space for the future, where people can experiment with innovative forms of contemporary rural living. History and Folk Culture of the Ausseerland

The city museum, known for its diversity and charm, is housed in the Kammerhof, a 14th-century architectural gem.

With 800 m² of exhibition space, the museum focuses primarily on the history and rich folk culture of the Ausseerland.

The spectacular finds from the world’s oldest salt mine and the world-famous discoveries from the Hallstatt cemetery were so significant that an entire cultural period was named after this place — the Hallstatt Culture (850–500 BCE) of the Early Iron Age. Visiting the World Heritage Museum is highly rewarding and illustrates the international significance of Hallstatt.
