Latest Episode: Bad Ischl – The Hinterrad Mountain House

The working conditions for miners at the time were far from easy. Long shifts combined with the exhausting footpaths to and from the mines made it impossible for them to live in Ischl. Instead, the workers were housed near the tunnels in so-called mountain houses (Berghäuser), where they stayed throughout the entire workweek — an almost exclusively male community. A helper, known as a Gäumel, was responsible for cooking and daily chores. Only on Saturday afternoons did the men descend back into the valley — a routine still echoed today in the dialect word “Abgang”, which refers to the start of the weekend.
