World Heritage is far more than an international designation – it is a living space, a source of identity, and a shared responsibility. But how can we preserve this value for future generations while also making it tangible for the people who live here today? What quality of life already emerges from being part of a World Heritage Site? Where are new approaches, spaces for retreat, or clear boundaries needed to maintain the balance between protection and use? These are the questions explored in this workshop.

In spring 2025, the World Heritage Management, in close cooperation with the municipality of Hallstatt, initiated a pioneering collaboration with RIEGL. The goal is to create a digital twin of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, expanding and refining the existing digital cultural landscape registry. This comprehensive research project serves to capture and document the World Heritage Site in detail.

Information Session and Panel Discussion

This year, World Heritage Day in the Hallstatt–Dachstein/Salzkammergut region focuses on the development of a guideline for building within the World Heritage Site. Discussions and workshops are planned during the event to involve all stakeholders and interested parties in this process.

On 26 November 2025, the Old Theatre in Steyr became a stage for new ideas. This historic location provided fresh impetus for the revitalisation of vacant and brownfield sites in the city centre. Under the motto ‘Land in sight’, experts discussed innovative approaches and used best practice examples to show how unused spaces can be brought back to life.
