World Heritage is far more than an international designation – it is a living space, a source of identity, and a shared responsibility. But how can we preserve this value for future generations while also making it tangible for the people who live here today? What quality of life already emerges from being part of a World Heritage Site? Where are new approaches, spaces for retreat, or clear boundaries needed to maintain the balance between protection and use? These are the questions explored in this workshop.

INTERREG Project “Liveable Alpine Region”

Workshop on “World Heritage as a Living Space – Shaping the Future in the Inner Salzkammergut”

The UNESCO World Heritage Site Hallstatt–Dachstein/Salzkammergut is far more than an international distinction: it is a living space, a source of identity, and a shared responsibility. But how can we preserve this value for future generations while also making it tangible for the people who live here today? What quality of life already arises from the World Heritage designation? Where are new approaches, spaces for retreat, or clear boundaries needed to maintain the balance between protection and use?

These questions were the focus of a workshop held as part of the INTERREG project “Liveable Alpine Region.” Participants discussed which retreat areas should be deliberately reserved for local residents, how the existing qualities of the World Heritage Site can be made more visible, and which measures are necessary for its long-term preservation. The central focus was not on tourism marketing, but on the question: How can World Heritage enhance the quality of life for the local population and be valued both internally and externally? Sustainable regional development is key, allowing visitors and residents alike to experience the Inner Salzkammergut. The discussion encompassed not only cultural values but also the preservation of the natural landscape of the World Heritage Site.

The workshop was moderated by Prof. Dr. Kurt Luger, an expert who holds the UNESCO Chair “Cultural Heritage and Tourism” at the University of Salzburg. With his long-standing knowledge of the region, he addressed the challenges and opportunities of the World Heritage area. His keynote presentation provided the foundation for open discussion and the development of shared guidelines.

The Tourism Association Inner Salzkammergut and the entire project team of the INTERREG project “Liveable Alpine Region” experienced an intensive and forward-looking workshop, placing World Heritage as the foundation of life in the region at the center and addressing even challenging topics.
