Land in sight: #upperREGION Award Day 2025

On 26 November 2025, the Old Theatre in Steyr became a stage for new ideas. This historic location provided fresh impetus for the revitalisation of vacant and brownfield sites in the city centre. Under the motto ‘Land in sight’, experts discussed innovative approaches and used best practice examples to show how unused spaces can be brought back to life.

Das Welterbemanagment nahm am OÖ Brachentag teil.

Creative concepts and innovative usage possibilities for brownfields were discussed together. The best-practice examples and architectural implementations that enable sustainable transformation provided exciting insights, also for the Salzkammergut World Heritage region.

Exciting initiatives from the Czech Republic for the use of industrial brownfields and solutions from Berlin were presented.

Daniel Resch presented "Monument Preservation - Perspective - Tradition" as the driving force for a future-oriented transformation. The necessity of Phase 0, which we also pursue in the Salzkammergut with the Baukultur guideline, was also centrally addressed. There are always solutions, and mostly, in the sense of golden energy, often cheaper than new construction. Early involvement in the planning process is key.

Chris Müller, in his inimitable manner, led to the evening's highlight with the presentation of the #upperREGION Award. The awards went to forward-looking projects for the revitalization of vacancies and innovative concepts for vitalizing town centers. From Hallstatt, Deputy Mayor Freddy Gamsjäger and Günther Kain were present for the renovated community center. A successful project that was honored along with many others at the end.
