A Symposium on Rural Building Culture between Tradition and Innovation
The interventa Hallstatt 2024 is a transdisciplinary symposium on building culture between tradition and innovation, held as part of the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024. Building culture (Baukultur) is a holistic and interdisciplinary concern, understanding space as the sum of its landscapes, architectures, and everyday structures. Preparing rural regions for a sustainable future requires both innovation and transformation.
The curators of interventa Hallstatt 2024, Sabine Kienzer and Marie-Therese Harnoncourt-Fuchs, invite regional and international protagonists of tomorrow’s building culture to explore topics such as population decline, new ways of living, sustainable tourism, resources and innovation, mobility, and landscape change. The participants come from architecture, philosophy, sociology, culinary arts, and the visual and performing arts. They are both global and local, avant-garde and traditional, operating between utopia and pragmatism.
Over four consecutive days, the symposium focuses on the conditions, tools, and applications needed to advance and communicate sustainable building culture. Formats will be performative, classical, and unconventional.
Hallstatt is envisioned as an inspiring hub for regional and international networking and interdisciplinary exchange between theory and practice. The symposium takes place at HTBLA Hallstatt.
“The building culture of tomorrow is a culture of awareness!”
