European Heritage Day 2024 – HAND//WERK Thought + Made

Discover, Understand, and Connect with Austria’s Monuments

Find around 300 exciting program points across Austria, all with free entry. The offerings include numerous guided tours and workshops. The program will be updated continuously in the coming weeks.

Celebrating European Heritage Day in the World Heritage Region

At the HAND.WERK.HAUS Salzkammergut, visitors can experience craftsmanship and culture in a protected historic setting. The house is part of the Schloss Neuwildenstein ensemble in the center of Bad Goisern, featuring a shop, exhibition spaces, a bookbinding workshop, and the cultural space “Open Space.”

The supporting association has 33 members, all craft businesses from the Salzkammergut and beyond. The permanent exhibition on the upper floors is divided into four themes:

• From Head to Toe
• On the Necessity of Beauty
• From Basement to Roof
• From Hand to Mouth

These showcase the craftsmanship of the association members. Particularly, the “From Basement to Roof” group contributes to restoration and revitalization in the protected area, recently reinforced by a clay plaster expert (January 2024).

A special exhibition connected to the European Capital of Culture 2024 year focuses on “PerlMUT” and “New Paths Between Craft and Art”. Around 40 creators from craft, art, and schools have developed their exhibits entirely by hand.

In 2016, the HAND.WERK.HAUS Salzkammergut, together with Werkraum Bregenzerwald and the Textile Center Haslach, was included in the UNESCO international register for good practices in preserving intangible cultural heritage.

About European Heritage Day
European Heritage Day is celebrated on the last Sunday of September under the motto HAND//WERK Thought + Made, highlighting craftsmanship and restoration as foundations of monument preservation. Owners open normally restricted or private sites to the public, allowing visitors to experience the importance of heritage conservation through special tours and program points.

This day is part of the European Heritage Days, an initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union, focusing in 2024 on “Heritage of Routes, Networks and Connections.”
